Wait, You Have How Many Twitter Accounts?!

@ConchRaider on Twitter asked the question the other day:

twitteracct

and I replied:

12twitteracct

Why that many??? Most people asked me (after they get over the initial shock that someone actually has 12 twitter accounts. Actually it’s a bit more than that. I recently added another one. Or two…)

I grabbed twitter handle names for various business ventures that I currently have and am in the planning process to launch. It costs *nothing* for you to get a twitter handle and once you got it, it’s yours until you cancel the account. So why not protect your business name?

Additionally, actually, for me, twitter is an experiment, like how I treat all the social networks that I am on. Social networks, as its name implies –> it’s social, it’s fun and it’s networking.

We all belong to different types of networking groups, you may be in a cancer group because you lost your loved one to cancer. Or you may be in a business group that is specifically for women’s economic independence, because you are a woman business owner seeking economic independence. Or you may be in a Boston Terrier meetup group because you love BTs.

(I’m sorry, how can you say no to a cutie like this???)

And every group has a different type of audience and demographics. We always say, being in small business (or real estate), you never know where your next lead will come from. So segmenting your social networks online is just another way to expand your networks by your interests online.

So I am doing it with twitter. I’ve started to segment tweets according to each type of audience & business ventures that I have. For example, I also teach green training, so @greenretraining is all about green news, tips, conferences, etc. And obviously, my bio for @greenretraining is different:

green real estate trainer in san francisco bay. tweet most of the time as herself @cindeelean. vows to reduce waste, plastic, green washing in real estate”

vs. my personal bio on @cindeelean:

social media addict, real estate home stager, entrepreneur, beer drinker, lover, thinker, doer, occasional snorer, treehugger, faster talker, always munching”

Frankly I was pleasantly surprised and shocked by this @greenretraining account. Because once I grabbed the handle, I completely forgot about it since I also grabbed other handles like “sfgreentraining,” “regreentraining,” etc. So I set up the account in late January, 2009 and after checking back couple months later, much to my surprise, the account had followers! Not only followers, I had several hundred followers without one single tweet! I had no link, no photo, no nothing, just a plain bio.

I thought: “hmmm, what the heck.” When I checked the other green real estate related handles that I grabbed, their follower numbers were dismal. So guess what? I picked @greenretraining for the permanent home of my green tweets.

I also don’t monitor this account much at all until I saw that the account followers reached about 800. I was like.. hmm.. perhaps it’s time to write something. Because I mainly tweet and interact with tweeple via @cindeelean, one account is already a lot of interactions, let alone another one (that’s why the others haven’t gotten that much love at all).

Plus I simply don’t have that much to say for all my 12 accounts, so every time I see a green tweet, I retweeted (RT) it as @greenretraining. Next thing I know, I started getting replies (@), direct messages (DM) and even #followfriday shoutouts. (I was floored when I saw that.. I was like, me? People want to follow me for #followfriday?)

I still don’t do much except RT on @greenretraining, although now I do started to interact with others more when people DM and @ me on @greenretraining. The account continues to receive steady growth, although it has slowed down comparing to its beginning.

Here is a graph from TwitterCounter.com. As you can see, the account gets new followers everyday. You know, for 175 updates, 1200 followers is pretty darn amazing.

green with envy about qik

Jeff Turner Demoing Qik for @cindeelean at #rebcla

the Qik demo Jeff recorded/demoed at #rebcla

I was at #rebcla (Real Estate Bar Camp Los Angeles) couple weeks ago. I pounced on Jeff about demoing once I found out he has Qik on his iphone (it’s not out yet for iPhone! You have to jailbreak it, which unfortunately I’m hardware challenged.). Qik allows you to record video via your mobile device. If you can get Qik on your phones, it’s a pretty nifty thing. You can also do it with ustream although I’ve heard Qik is better.

Anyway, here is Jeff’s demo on Qik. Special thanks to @andykaufman since he just happened to stand there and Jeff sicked the Qik/iPhone on him. :)

The nifty thing about having Qik on your iPhone is that you don’t have to lug another recording device like flip around (even though flip is pretty darn amazing) and you can chat with live audiences who may or may not be in your network. (Although I think ustream does this as well)

Ah and a few of you have been asking me how I got my avatar. Thanks to @morganb who was there to capture a few of these fun moments (that you will see in the Qik demo). You can also see @morganb’s flickr set of #rebcla here.

Where do you link to get leads/sales?

I get asked that questions all the time now since the real estate market had slowed down. I meet a lot of people who are not working as much as it used to be, or just plain desperate for work.

Frankly, that’s like asking me What bar do you go to to find a husband? or What diet do you do to lose weight? There are just no magic bullets in any types of networking, whether it is online or in person. What works is persistence, consistency, and being geniunely caring to your sphere and friends. It never hurts to have a bigger sphere, in real estate (or small busienss for that matter), you never know where your next referral will come from or if you will meet a potential business partner.

There are tricks to get you there quicker: Read More »

Show the Earth Some Tech Love & Geek Out

Hey it’s Earth Day!

Where is the Heavens and where is the Earth? by !ShT!aQ on Flickr

Where is the Heavens and where is the Earth? by !ShT!aQ on Flickr

You can show the environment some love by some simple steps:

*Considering switching to solar energy: not only there are rebates out there for you to grab, a lot of companies are willing to do estimate to see how solar energy can benefit you

*Turn off the computer or any electronics and lights when they are not in use.

*Better yet, kill phantom power [when your electronics are plugged in, even if they are not on, they still suck energy] by using power strips.

*Consider switching to e-newsletter if you already haven’t done so: it not only save trees, it will also save you money on printing, buying paper and labor of licking stamps ;)

*Don’t forget to recycle your electronics properly: A lot of electronics are actually very toxic to environment because they are made from heavy metals and plastic. When plastic breaks down, the poisons will leach into our eco-system and poisons water source. There are designated recycle facilities all around the countries now, so be responsible and recycle your electronic waste properly!

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

On Online Marketing

Someone shot me a message via LinkedIn the other day ask about online marketing. Here is what I really think of online marketing:

No matter how much you online market, you still have to put in face time in real life.

When I first started my business, the market was doing super hot, so everyone was making money and the needs for stagers were high. Then the market slowly going downhill in beginning of 2008, the demands of stagers slowed down.

I know this because I can see the # of calls we used to get slowed down, and also through my Google Analytics. Just by comparing visitor #s to 2007, the #s were just not there.

That means traditional methods of marketing are not out completely.

Essentially real estate is a people business, and inf act, same goes true for entrepreneurs. Our business is not only what’s in our titles, our business is really about creating, keeping, maintaining and continuously maintain relationships that are meaningful and fruitful. A handshakes will never be replaced by the #s of Twitter followers you have. People still want human interactions. That’s why Tweetups or TechKaraoke become so popular.

So does that mean we shouldn’t market ourselves online???

NO, on the contrary. Online marketing can amplify your existing marketing and create new lead generation funnels.

How in the world do you think a 25-year-old with no real seed money and no wealthy friends managed to stay in business and move it into a 3,600 square feet warehouse? I did it by wowing the first client who found me online and then grew my database from there.

More importantly I realized what I was doing in 2006 and 2007 (like blogging and search engine optimization/SEO) were just  tricks for kids. Social networks is where the party is at. Social networks have become increasingly powerful largely because how viral and easy it is to spread information. Moreover, it incorporates all the juicy benefits you already get from blogging — rich in keywords, riding coat tails to sites like Facebook or LinkedIn, who already have high SEO capabilities built in.

Say I wrote a blog post, which publishes on my blog. Because I already hooked my blog to my twitter, the blog gets broadcast to my 2600+ followers on twitter. Potentially, someone can retweet my tweet which gets broadcast to their networks. Oh and not to mention my Facebook is linked to my twitter feed, so my blog gets to my 600+ contacts on Facebook as well! If 1 contact comments on my Facebook feed, the 120 contacts he has (on average, a Facebook user has 120 friends) sees my blog on their dashboards. Not to mention other services like FriendFeed, LinkedIn, MyBlogLog and many other social network services.

Just take a look of my LinkedIn’s Network Statistics, I have 507 connections on LinkedIn, that means:

Just look at your potential reach if you have 507 connections. 6,236,900+!

Just look at your potential reach if you have 507 connections. 6,236,900+!

More importantly, to build a business for longevity, you need to adapt for the long haul.

There is no doubt that technology changes all the time, in faster and faster speed. That means your business need to catch up if not running ahead of everyone else.

  • If you don’t have a website, how do you expect people to find you and hire you?
  • If you have a website but is not very search engine friendly, how can people find you?
  • Okay, so now I can find you on search engine, but how do I know you are credible? Do you have a Yelp profile for your business? Or can I see testimonials from LinkedIn?
  • More importantly, are you leveraging your network for its full potential so you can get referral businesses?

In real estate, we say it’s a numbers game. But the way I see it, it’s about impressions. There are:

  • The first impressions of your profiles/website/marketing materials
  • Then the impressions from people who are associated with you
  • The impressions of how many times you touch them with your message

To me, the #s of touch is most important. Because people see you once, they may or may not remember you. They see your friends, maybe you are cool by association. But to continuously appear in front of them and remind them of you, and telling them your messages and making those personal connections with them, that’s priceless. Because next time people mention “oh I need a stager/real estate agent/…” you pop into their heads immediately because you already “stay” in front of them frequently.

That’s how I think about online marketing — it’s really about developing meaning relationships, friendships, then connect in real life if possible, and that’s when collaboration happens.

Umm, So What Did I Win???

I have about 2,600+ followers on Twitter. It’s not really a big deal since I only talk to about 5 consistently on a daily basis. So when a friend came up to me recently and said “Hey, I almost beat you in follower #s!” I thought:

“Oh, really? I didn’t know it was a contest. So what cool prize did I win??? Oh, nothing. Bummer. A beer would’ve been nice.”

I think collectively as a culture, we are obsessed about #s: the price tag on our cars, the sales #s this month, how many hot boys I dated, blah blah blah.  This past week the whole twitter world and entertainment news have been buzzing about @Oprah and @aplusk (Ashton Kutcher in case you still live under a rock) and how @aplusk just surpassed CNN in 1 million followers. Cool for Ashton, but what does that mean to have 1 million followers?

It could mean…. those 1 million followers just followed for a silly “movement.”

Or, Ashton can leverage his celebrity powers for charity by tweeting about worthy causes, or.. I don’t know. Inspire someone to cure cancer?

I think my friend Jeff said the best. Social networks are about Y.E.O. — You Engaging Others. He recently made up 2 fake accounts which just happened to attract thousands of followers in a matter of weeks. He did it by leveraging 3rd party tools (are you wondering how he did it? He will tell you in this post: YEO — Why Twitter Follower Count Mean Nothing).

Obviously it’s different for celebrities. People will want to talk to them even without prompting. But for us regular folks, it’s really about establishing meaningful relationships that create values for the community, even if you are just yakking about food, like I frequently do.

So the choice is always yours:

  1. collect “friends” like baseball cards or..
  2. actually make significant and meaningful relationships that you can take offline

which one do you pick??
